American politics has always been a struggle. There was never a time when strength and courage did not need an equal measure of determination and the conviction of one's beliefs in order to secure victory.
But now, we live in a cynical world where dearly held beliefs do not engender respect nearly as much as vitriol and smear campaigns. If you're not for someone then damned if you're not one of the "enemy" – beyond all rhetoric or semblance of reason.
